Barbara Cockrell is entering her sixth year as Associate Dean at Western Michigan University Libraries where she has responsibility for collections management and technical services. She provides leadership and accountability for collections issues that include the acquisitions budget, licensing, evaluation, accountability and strategic planning. She is an active member of the Michigan Council of State University Cooperative Collection Development Discussion Group where the Michigan Shared Print Initiative (MI-SPI) deselection project originated. Previously she was employed as a science reference librarian at Western Michigan University and earned a BA and a D.Phil in Biological Sciences prior to an MLIS in library Science from Wayne State University. She has presented internationally and authored a number of peer-reviewed scholarly articles in library and in biological sciences. Her current interests include facilitating information discovery and delivery, developments in scholarly communications and collaborative approaches to collections management.
