Nancy Gibbs is head of Acquisitions at Duke University Libraries, The department is responsible for ordering all monographs, serials, periodicals and electronic resources and orders, receives, and catalogs non-Roman language materials. She has held positions at Penn State University Libraries as a Reference Librarian and Head of Personnel; Auburn University as a Humanities Cataloger and Approval Plan Librarian; and at North Carolina State University Libraries as Asst Head and Head of Acquisitions. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from James Madison University and her Masters in Library Science from the University of Denver. Before entering the library profession she taught first grade for two years. She is the past chair of the Acquisitions Section of the American Library Association; is active in the profession; serving on the editorial boards of two professional journals: Serials Review and Library Collections and Technical Services. She was the 2007 recipient of the Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award presented by the American Library Association’s Association of Library Collections and Technical Services. In 2008 she was asked to teach a five day class in acquisitions practices to students in the United Arab Emirates at Al-Ain University. She continues to speak and consult on acquisitions practices, electronic books, and electronic resources at local, national and international conferences. She serves on advisory boards for a number of library vendors and is a consultant in the field of acquisitions, publishing and vendor relationships.
